What should I pay attention when buying BIG DIAMETER 4340 Alloy Steel?

Honestly, buying AISI 4340 (or its European cousin 34CrNiMo6) in large bars-say, over 250 mm (10 inches) in diameter-is a completely different game from buying ordinary round bar. Once you go that big, things get tricky. This steel has excellent hardenability, but that very advantage becomes a problem in large sizes. The heat‑treatment effect varies widely from surface to centre; core properties are unpredictable, and thermal stresses can even cause the blank to crack before it ever sees a lathe. So what should you really watch out for? Here’s my list of hard‑won lessons.

1. Don’t assume “4340” guarantees full hardening everywhere

The nickel‑chromium‑molybdenum chemistry gives it good hardenability, but oil quenching its limits. Once the diameter over 150–200 mm, the centre simply can’t cool fast enough to become fully martensitic. What actually get is mostly upper bainite(meaning yield strength and impact toughness will be significantly lower than surface readings.)

So you must check with your design team: are they calculating strength based on surface properties, quarter‑depth (t/4), or centre values? Those numbers can differ by 20‑30%. If they design for surface properties but the critical stress is in the core, you’re asking for trouble.

2. “As‑forged” is a trap–don’t skip annealing

I’ve seen people try to save time by ordering as‑forged large rounds and planning to heat‑treat them later. Problem: 4340 can harden just by air cooling. If cooling after forging isn’t perfectly uniform, tiny internal cracks can form-some old‑timers call it “ringing cracks” because you can actually hear a tinkling sound as it cools.

3. Ultrasonic inspection–don’t just a simple demand

It is recommended to clearly state: Comply with ASTM A388 or SEP 1921 Group 3 Class C/c or D/d, 100% inspection.

4. Forging ratio–the invisible guarantee of internal quality

Steel ingots always have centre porosity, shrinkage, and segregation-that’s just how solidification works. The only way to break up those defects is enough forging reduction. I personally recommend 4:1 from ingot to finished bar. Any less and you’re gambling-gambling that those microscopic voids won’t show up halfway through machining.

5. Mechanical test reports–always check where the sample was taken

There’s a common trick: the properties on the mill test report (MTR) are usually taken from near the surface. Surface properties look great, but the core is a different story. Always ask for the sampling location-surface, quarter‑depth, or centre? If it’s not where your design needs it, the numbers are meaningless to you.

Final word

Buying large‑diameter 4340 isn’t about chemistry-it’s about process control. Put every detail in your technical specification, confirm each step with your supplier, and never assume anything. Because from diameter 250 mm, the The technical requirements are not just simple as hot roll.

In Vim Steel, we are not only check chemical or UT for 4340 forged bar, we would pay more attention on detail, and make sure the steel same as your demanded.
