For high-gloss cosmetic cavities or demanding texturing, discuss alternative mold-steel grades with the steel supplier and toolmaker. Grade selection should follow the required surface finish, corosion environment, section size,and heat treatment plan.

Heat-treatment process

  • Soft annealing: about 780-820℃, followed by slow furnace cooling. Reduce hardness before extensive machining when required.

  • Hardening: producer guidance commonly lists about 1000-1050℃ with oil or air quenching. Additional hardening where the as-supplied condition is not the final target.

  • ​Tempering: Temper Immediately after hardening; choose temperature from the producer’s tempering curve. Balance final hardness, toughness, dimensional stability, and corrosion behavior.

  • Stress relieving: Use a steelmaker-approved cycle after heavy rough machining or weld repair. Reduce residual stress before finishing critical dimensions.
