Regular 1.2343 isn’t a "cheap" or "low-end" material. It’s actually a solid hot-work tool steel that balances heat resistance, toughness, hardenability, machinability, and polishability. Suppliers normally recommend it for hot-work and tooling applications.


You can probably stick with the regular version if:


  • Your mold or tool is small or has thin sections.

  • The design is simple, with no sharp corners or high-stress spots.

  • The working conditions are mild—not too much heat cycling or heavy impacts.

  • You’ve already used this same material before and have good data on how long it lasts.

  • The mold is easy to swap out, and downtime isn’t a big deal.

  • You're on a tight budget, and you’ve already agreed on inspection, composition, and delivery condition in the contract.


A smart buying decision isn’t about always picking the most expensive option. It’s about matching quality to the actual risk level.



When you do buy 1.2343 ESR, don’t just write "1.2343 ESR" on your RFQ


That three-letter code is just the starting point. To make sure you’re not paying for a name without getting the real goods, include these details in your inquiry, order, or technical agreement:


  1. Write out the full material name

    At minimum, specify: 1.2343 / X37CrMoV5-1, ESR, soft-annealed condition.

    If your project follows a specific standard, brand, or internal spec, put that in writing too. Don’t just say "H11" and call it done.


  2. Ask for traceable mill certificates tied to the actual heat

    The cert should match the specific heat number and clearly show the standard, chemical composition, delivery condition, and test results. If ESR is a must-have, make sure the paperwork actually proves it was ESR-melted.


  3. Agree on ultrasonic testing upfront

    "Tested" doesn’t mean "passed to the same standard." Before you order, agree on the testing standard, acceptance level, when it’s done, how edges and blind spots are handled, and what the report looks like. For big blocks, don’t wait until after machining to argue about what's acceptable.


  4. Add extra requirements for cleanliness, structure, or toughness if past failures were an issue

    If you’ve had problems with inclusions, transverse cracking, center porosity, or uneven structure before, talk to your technical team about adding specs for inclusion rating, annealed structure, grain size, or impact toughness. Don’t assume "ESR" automatically covers all that.


  5. Confirm dimensions and where samples are taken

    The same grade can behave differently in different section sizes. Give your supplier the final dimensions, machining allowance, and critical load directions. Also check whether the property data is typical, guaranteed, or actually measured from a specific location.


  6. Include heat treatment in your material review

    For example, Uddeholm recommends the same austenitizing range (990–1010°C) for both regular Vidar 1 and Vidar 1 ESR, and stresses fast quenching while avoiding distortion and cracking. That tells you: ESR doesn't let you skip good heat-treatment practice. Pick the right steel, but if you mess up the heat treat, the mold can still fail early.

Common questions


Is 1.2343 ESR harder than regular 1.2343?

Not necessarily. ESR is a melting/refining process, not a hardness grade. Both versions can be heat-treated similarly and hit the same target hardness. The real difference is in cleanliness, segregation, uniformity, and the test evidence behind them.


Is 1.2343 ESR exactly the same as H11 ESR?

1.2343 / X37CrMoV5-1 is often considered equivalent to AISI H11, but "equivalent" doesn’t mean identical in all specs, composition limits, size effects, or quality levels. Always base your order on a clear standard, the mill’s data sheet, and the actual cert. Both Uddeholm and BÖHLER list 1.2343 alongside H11 in their reference systems.


Do I have to use ESR for die-casting molds?

Not always. It depends on the mold size, alloy being cast, heat cycles, design, target life, and downtime cost. High-end die-casting jobs often use ESR 1.2343, but you should still base your choice on failure patterns. If your current problems come from sharp corners, uneven cooling, poor preheat, or bad heat treatment, switching to ESR alone won't fix the root cause.


Does ESR guarantee the mold won’t crack?

No. ESR improves the steel’s internal quality, but it can’t replace good design, proper heat treatment, adequate preheat, stable cooling, and careful operation. It’s more professional to think of ESR as reducing material-related risk, not as a "never-crack" miracle cure.


How do I know if the extra cost of ESR is worth it?

First, figure out the total cost of one mold failure—lost production, replacement labor, rework, etc. Then compare that to the extra cost of ESR. If the mold takes a long time to make, downtime is expensive, the part is large, or surface quality is critical, ESR usually pays off. If the job is simple, easy to replace, and your regular material has a solid track record, think twice before upgrading.

So next time you see two quotes, don’t just ask: “Why is ESR more expensive?”

Better question: “What’s the real cost if this mold fails early because of an internal material defect?”
