What is the core strengths of our 1.2085 steel?

In the pre-hardened condition. This grade offers a unique combination of high corrosion resistance and excellent machinability-precisely addressing the common industrial challenge of balancing rust protection with fast, efficient processing.

Below are the four key advantages:

  1. Superior Machinability (Enhanced by Sulfur)

Compared with conventional rust-resistant mould steels such as 1.2316 (420/420H), our 1.2085 contains a controlled addition of sulfur (0.05%-0.10%). The sulfur forms fine manganese sulphide inclusions, which act as chip breakers and provide a self‑lubricating effect during cutting. This significantly improves deep‑hole drilling and milling efficiency, reduces tool wear by 30%-50%, and lowers overall machining costs.

  2. Excellent Corrosion and Acid Resistance (High CR Content)

With 15%-17% chromium, 1.2085 offers strong resistance against corrosion and acidic attack. It is particularly suitable for mould components processing plastics that release corrosive gases or acidic substances, such as PVC, flame‑retardant PC, and fluoropolymers. In humid environments or water‑cooled mould systems, it effectively prevents rusting and blockage of cooling channels, minimising maintenance downtime.

  3. Pre‑hardened Delivery (No Additional Heat Treatment Required)

Supplied in the pre‑hardened condition (280-325 HBW, approx. 28-33 HRC), the steel has already undergone quenching and tempering at the mill. After your machining is complete, it can be put directly into service-eliminating the cost, lead time, and risk of distortion or cracking associated with post‑machining heat treatment.

  4. Excellent Dimensional Stability and Uniformity

In its pre‑hardened state, the microstructure is homogeneous and internal stresses are low. This ensures high dimensional stabilty even during complex operations such as deep drilling, slotting, or substantial material removal.

1.2085 came into being and effectively solved the 'PVC mold frame crisis' in Europe's injection molding sector-it offers resistance to HCl gas corrosion while maintaining the same machinability as standard carbon steel.

At Vim Steel, every shipment of 1.2085 is accompanied by free chemical composition analysis, ultrasonic flaw detection (UT testing), and hardness testing-all at no extra charge. We guarantee that the material you receive delivers true value for your investment.
