We once had a customer bought 1.2343 ESR, asked a deceptively simple question: “The 1.2343 ESR surface looks fine, but what about the inside?” That question gets straight to the heart of the matter.
Visual inspection only tells you what’s on the outside. If there are serious inclusions, cracks, or other internal defects, they often go unnoticed until machining is under way—or worse, until the die is already in service. By then, you’re looking at higher processing costs and delayed deliveries. That’s why, for demanding 1.2343 grades, we offer the Electro Slag Remelting (ESR) process on request.
ESR improves purity and structural uniformity, giving you a more consistent base material for subsequent forging and heat treatment. Building on that, we can supply 1.2343 / X37CrMoV5 1 in the forged and annealed condition. Forging refines the internal grain structure, and annealing makes it easier for your shop to machine.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – what you can’t see matters just as much
For critical die applications, just delivering the steel often isn’t enough. When customers require it, we can perform Ultrasonic Testing (UT) on 1.2343.
UT picks up abnormal reflected signals from inside the steel, helping to identify hidden defects. In a nutshell, visual inspection covers the visible quality, while UT goes deeper—literally—to verify internal soundness. This is especially important for large forgings and any die material that has to meet strict internal quality standards.
We don’t just supply steel; we supply completely work
Over the years, we’ve noticed that customers are paying more and more attention to traceability.
If all you get for a batch is a basic mill test certificate, it still leaves questions: What were the actual test results for this specific lot? Has a third-party lab looked at it? Do the chemistry and mechanical properties for this particular heat number really match the requirements?
To answer those questions, we can provide comprehensive quality documentation for 1.2343 / X37CrMoV5-1.
Upon request, we can arrange SGS third-party inspection and furnish the corresponding SGS report, so you can verify quality through an independent source.
We can also supply an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate. This certificate is tied to a specific batch and includes actual test data for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and any other agreed-upon items—giving you a solid foundation for quality validation and full traceability.
